     ·        Raw onions also equate to a healthy heart by encouraging the production of good cholesterol      (HDL).

     ·        Onions can reduce inflammation and cure infections; the pain and swelling of a bee sting can be    relieved by applying onion juice on the affected area.

     ·        Quercentin is a flavonoid compound found in onions and has a direct antitumor effect with    immune-enhancing properties.

To get the most out of the benefits of eating onions it is best to eat them raw and a salad is the best way to go around that, try to enjoy raw onions with every meal by adding kachumbari to the menu.

How to make Kachumbari

Kachumbari is a Swahili term to refer to raw tomato, onion and chilli salad used to accompany most meals. To make kachumbari all you need are the following ingredients;

1 large red onion finely chopped then soaked in warm water
½ a teaspoon of salt
3 large red tomatoes finely chopped
2 tablespoon lemon juice
2 chillies (red) chopped finely


Prepare by tossing the finely chopped onions, tomatoes and chillies in a bowl and mixing with a spoon. Then add the salt and lemon juice to the mixture and mix well. Some people prefer to add avocado for the added texture and rich taste, so for the same recipe you can choose to add half of a large avocado finely chopped. Get the health benefits of eating onions today and prepare a side dish of Kachumbari with every meal. Enjoy!
